Non-contact Liquid-Level Volume Detection

The VolumeCheck™ uses ultrasonic technology to measure the height of the sample meniscus without coming into contact with the sample. Throughput is about one minute to read a 96 well plate or tube rack (3 min for 50 Model). This easy to use system provides a robust alternative to manual or visual well plate inspection.

How It Works

The VolumeCheck uses an ultrasonic sensor to measure the distance  between the sensor and the height of the sample meniscus. It then extrapolates the distance from a reference curve or table created by the user and outputs the volume with a typical accuracy of +/- 10μl. The technology allows for detection of sample volume in a wide variety labware. 

The VolumeCheck software reference curve utility assists the user in creating the reference curve for each labware. Reference curves are a basic table of known volume versus sensor distance measured. Reference curves are created one time and it is easy to switch between different types of labware.  

The resolution and accuracy can be positively influenced when users centrifuge plates, use labware with good dimensional characteristics, and have generally well-behaved samples (no air bubbles in the samples or droplets on the inside wall of the well). The VolumeCheck returns a higher resolution (+/- 5uL) with low volume plates vs. higher volume plates (+/- 10uL). 

The VolumeCheck exhibits excellent repeatability, which makes it an appropriate choice for many volume inspection tasks.
